Ramsey (Hunts) flying sites 1930s

Note: This map only shows the position of Ramsey town within the UK.

RAMSEY: Private airstrip?

User: Mr Herbert Sykes

Period of operation: Circa 1926 to 1928

NOTES: There is a mention of Mr Sykes operating the AVRO 504K G-EBCK ‘Pysche’ from Ramsey in May 1926.

I suppose it must be asked - could it be that this site was at RAMSEY in Essex? Any advice will be most welcome.

RAMSEY: Temporary aerodrome?

NOTES: It was during a Cobham ‘Display’ here in 1935, (possibly at UPWOOD, now CAMBRIDGESHIRE?), that Eric Collins who was performing aerobatic glider routines for Cobham, attempted a bunt manoeuvre in his Grunau Baby resulting in the wings breaking off.

For some reason he did not attempt to bale out, and he was killed in the subsequent crash. I suspect that the reason he did not attempt to bale out was simply because he wasn't wearing a parachute. When experiencing a glider flight in Europe, even non-aerobatic, I had to wear a parachute. This contrasts markedly with common practice in the UK, and indeed, even when making aerobatic flights in powered aircraft, I have never been asked to wear a parachute.
