Ramster
Note: This map shows the position of Ramster Hall. Presumably the airstrip was nearby.
RAMSTER HALL: Civil Landing Ground (Aka RAMSNEST COMMON)
Operated by: The Right Hon. Sir Henry Norman
Location: In/near Ramsnest Common, 3nm E of Haslemere, W of A283, NW of junction with B2131
Period of operation: 1930s only?
Runway(s): Max landing run: 274 grass
NOTES: If accurate a landing run of 274 metres was minimal even in those days and today very much in the microlight sphere of operations. But it must be remembered that no safety allowances had even been thought about, let alone recommended.
Listed in the 1930s ‘A.A. Register of Landing Grounds’ one of seventy-four approved A.A. (Automobile Association) Landing Grounds in the 1930s in mainland Britain. Fuel and transport (typically a taxi service) were available from Mann’s Garage, Chiddingfold, which it appears is still in business today (2013). The hotel recommended was The Crown Inn, also in Chiddingfold and again, still very much in business in 2013 offering ‘5 star’ facilities.
