Rathlan Island
RATHLAN ISLAND: Temporary landing ground
Note: This picture was obtained from Google Earth ©
NOTE: Aid supply flights. February 1938. Rathlan Island is situated off the north coast and N of Ballycastle. Obviously I strongly suspect there is an interesting story here - can anybody kindly supply the details?
Looking at the picture today it is hard to envisage where a fixed wing aircraft might have landed. But we need to remember that given a stiff wind, a DH84 Dragon could easily manage a strip around 200 metres long. Or of course, perhaps a seaplane or flying boat could have been used is the sea state was calm enough.
