Ravensworth

Note: This map only gives the location of Ravensworth within the UK. If anybody knows the site used, this advice will be most welcome.

RAVENSWORTH: Temporary airfield

Location: About 1nm S of the A66, roughly 5nm WNW of Scotch Corner on the A1.

NOTES: It is reported that in early 1910 the Rev. Sidney Swann was experimenting with a monoplane here. His name crops up elsewhere, in CUMBRIA especially.

I am editing a life of the Rev Sidney Swann [1862-1942] written by Stephen White in Carlisle. Swann's flight in a home built craft occurred on July 11th 1910 at Crosby Ravensworth in Cumbria from a flat field in the parish. He crash landed on a flock of sheep.
