Rawdon Meadows
RAWDON MEADOWS: Early flying site (Aka APPERLEY BRIDGE)
Note: The first three items were kindly provided by Mr Rod Hewitt. The fourth item is from my Google Earth © derived database.
Operated by: Mr John William House, a member of the Northern Aero Syndicate
Location: Roughly 2.5nm SW to SSW of LEEDS-BRADFORD airport, about 3.5nm NNW of Bradford city centre
Period of operation: Early 1910 only?
NOTES: The only initial evidence of this flying site came from an excellent article on Filey Sands by Eric Littledike in the Spring 2011 edition of Prop-Swing magazine.
To quote: "The first recorded flight from the sands at Filey was on the 25th July 1910 by John William House of the Northern Aero Syndicate. Restricted by the limited runway space at Apperley Bridge, his Bradford flying site, House moved his 25 hp Blériot monoplane to Filey to coincide with his honeymoon!" Grand to find a chap who obviously had his priorities sorted. Oooops, sorry ladies! To rephrase........
As Rod Hewitt kindly explains, Apperley Bridge describes the area, the flying site was on RAWDON MEADOWS.
