RAWTENSTALL: Kite flying trials

Operated by: Samuel F Cody

Location: Queen’s Meadow

Period of operation: Dec 9th 1902

NOTES: It appears Cody gave demonstrations of kite flying, the smallest being 15ft across, the largest 48ft. He used piano wire for the smallest and steel cable paid out from a windlass for the largest. It is said he had twelve miles of steel wire and cable at that time.

And don’t forget in September 1902 he’d set a altitude record of 14,000ft from COW HILL near Newcastle-upon-Tyne (TYNE & WEAR). As said elsewhere it is perhaps difficult to appreciate today just how significant the large kite flying trials were to the development of powered flight in the UK at least.

However, it seems that there is no mention of Cody conducting a man-carrying kite demonstration here.
