Roanoke

ROANOKE:   Private airstrip      (Aka BOSHAM HOE)

Note:  I have used this name to differentiate it from the later BOSHAM HOE listing.

The first three pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©, the area view is from my Google Earth © derived database.

Location:  In Bosham Hoe, roughly 3.5nm SW of Chichester city centre

Period of operation:  Unknown ?  Perhaps from 1986 until 2008?

Runway:  02/20   200   grass

NOTES:  We have Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for pointing out this location. My first reaction was - too short and the location, in between housing most unlikely too. But then I remembered that I do like to work on the age old principal of:  If it looks like a duck, waddles like a duck, and quacks like a duck......it probably is a duck. So, back to the 'drawing board', donning my patented "Sherlock Holmes" detective kit, complete with 12 inch metric converter.

Graham had also pointed out to me that the de Havilland DH.87B Hornet Moth G-ADKM, (ex W5751), was registered to this address from April 1986 until November 2008. A delve on the inter-web revealed performance figures that, have to say, astonished me. Plus of course performance figures are, albeit with a new machine, fully loaded. Take-off = 148 metres. Landing = 114  metres. Stall speed 40 knots. Initial rate of climb = 800 ft/min.

So, yes indeed, this site being entirely feasible for operating a Hornet Moth. But, no sign of a hangar? Well, the Hornet Moth has folding wings, so no need of a 'hangar', just a reasonable sized garage sufficing for storage. If anybody can kindly offer advice and information, this will be much appreciated.
