Rolleston Race Course

ROLLESTON RACE COURSE:  Temporary aerodrome     (Aka ROLLESTON RACECOURSE AERODROME)

Event:  Rolleston Aviation Meeting

Location:  Just W to NW of Rolleston village, about 4nm W of Newark town centre

Period of operation:  13th to 17th May 1913

A MICHAEL T HOLDER GALLERY

We have Mike Holder, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for both finding and then investigating this event. To date (Dec 2023) no evidence appears to exist of this location being used for subsequent aviation activities. It was clearly quite a major event at the time given the press coverage. And, the racecourse is still being used today, albiet with a much reduced 'circuit' as that used in 1913.

Mike Holder had been in touch with Colin Savill, the curator at Newark Air Museum, and he kindly sent this account he had made.

NOTES: I will happily admit (in Dec 2023) that when I first started the research for this project some twenty five years ago, I had absolutely no idea just how much flying activity had been taking place prior to WW1. As time goes on my flabber is ghasted in ever increasing amounts. It really is astonishing! Hopefully this 'Guide' is providing the evidence in fairly copious quantities, but, one thing is for certain, there is more to come.
