Rotherham

Note: This map shows the position of the Rotherham Cricket Grounds in 2017. Are they in the same location as in 1891?

ROTHERHAM: Balloon ascent

Note:   This map was kindly provided by Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide'.

Location: The Cricket Ground

Period of operation:  2nd June, 1891

NOTES: In his book Falling Upwards, Richard Holmes tells us that a poster declares that; "Miss Maude Brooks will Drop from the Clouds". This was of course a parachute descent, in the Edwardian era a popular attraction in many cities and indeed many provincial towns.

Many men and women participated, and it was of course in those days a very risky occupation. Probably part of the attraction, for the public, was that they could witness serious injury and even somebody killed.
