Royal London Hospital
ROYAL LONDON HOSPITAL: Hospital helipad
Note: This picture was obtained from Google Earth ©
Location: Whitechapel Road, in Whitechapel, east London
Landing area: On top of one of the hospital buildings
NOTES: Most unusually a HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) helicopter has been based on top of the hospital for many years. I think this is an unique arrangement - in the UK at least. I still find it astonishing that 'London's Air Ambulance' is a registered charity. One of the greatest capital cities in the world depends on a charity for this service. But, being a tad cynical - perhaps all the better?
The service was founded in 1989 with the Aérospatiale SA365 Dauphin G-HEMS - which was retired in 2000. In recent years the service now has two helicopters, both MD 902 Explorers - G-HEMS and G-LNDN. Although ostensibly a spare, the aim is to keep the second helicopter in a state of readiness in case of a major emergency. It appears that on average five patients a day are tended to.
You can see close-up pictures of G-HEMS if you look at my listing for DRAYTON GREEN. (Which is where I live).
