Sandy Bay playing fields

SANDY BAY playing fields:  One-off temporary flying site

Location:  Just NE of Larne town centre

Period of operation: Probably (?) 2010

NOTES: This information was obtained from an obiturary published in the June issue of Light Aviation magazine in June 2022.

Simply stated Norman Surplus had first embarked from here in his Rotorsport UK MT-03 autogyro G-YROX, to become the first pilot to fly an autogyro around the world. In the end, surmounting so many problems, he did achieve his aim - taking nine years to do so. An achievement which seems to be, sadly, barely recognised, today.
