A MICHAEL T HOLDER GALLERY
We have Mike Holder, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for providing the following maps and articles.
Article One was published in the Herts and Essex Observer on the 27th June 1931.
Article Two was also published in the Herts and Essex Observer, but this time on the 22nd April 1933.
Military users: RFC/RAF (Royal Flying Corps / Royal Air Force)
39 [Home Defence] Sqdn (Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2, B.E.12, S.E.5 & F.E.2b, plus the Bristol F.2 Fighter)
Location: About 1nm WSW of Spellbrook, 1nm NW of Sawbridgeworth, both on the A1184, the old A11
Period of operation: 1916 to 1919 (Some say 1918)
Site area: 31 acres 411 x 274
NOTES: Not to be confused with the later WW2 airfield, the southern half of which - more or less - occupied this site. See seperate listing for SAWBRIDGEWORTH WW2.
It appears that this site was used briefly for gliding in 1928.
On the 28th June 1931 the Herts and Essex Gliding Club hosted a Flying Display here.
On the 17th May 1933 the British Hospitals Air Pageant held a display here - and they also called it SPELLBROOKE FLYING GROUND.
