Shanklin

Note: THis map shows the position for APSE MANOR aerodrome, which I now believe was also known as SHANKLIN. Could anybody be kind enough to help sort this out. Such advice will be most welcome.

SHANKLIN:  The mystery aerodrome?   (Presumably APSE MANOR?)

NOTES: Sorting out the various flying sites on the Isle-of-Wight really has been a bit of a nightmare. One author calls a location by one name, another author by a different name.

However, despite fifteen years of research, I still cannot determine the history of SHANKLIN. And yet here it is, bold as brass, on a 1935 aviation chart.

Can anybody help to resolve this?

Yes, the former Shanklin Airfield was indeed at Apse Manor. There is still a hangar there which is now used to house a small collection of historic army vehicles.
