South Bank heliport

SOUTH BANK: Heliport (also known as WATERLOO)

South Bank in 1951.  Copyright - British European Airways
South Bank in 1951.  Copyright - British European Airways

Note: The Westland WS.51 Dragonfly in the picture is on short finals to land and was presumably operated by BEA with a special colour scheme applied for the Festival of Britain.

Operated by: BEA

Location: In what is now known as Jubilee Gardens, just N of the former County Hall building and between the Thames and Belvedere Road

Period of operation: For the Festival of Britain in May 1951 only?

NOTES: Later BEA started a helicopter service from HEATHROW using Westland S.55s (only?) starting on the 2nd July 1955 and terminating on the 31st May 1956. 3,822 passengers were carried. This service presumably used the newly opened heliport at Battersea?
