St Just

St JUST: Regional airport

NOTES: In the 1930s land was obtained for a regional airport near St Just on Kelynack Downs by Channel Air Ferries to serve the Scilly Isles. With a small booking office and a hangar transported from BLACKPOOL it had a runway of 680 metres. The intial service was once daily! The return fare being £1.15s, interchangeable with the IOS steamship services.

The big question being - was this exactly the same site as the LANDS END airport we have today? I strongly suspect it is as the village of Kelynack is just north of the present airport. However, experience has taught me to be very wary of jumping to conclusions.

The initial flight was by the DH Dragon G-ADCR on the 15th September 1937. A bit later the Fox Moth G-ACFF was added for pleasure flights and charters. In early 1938 a second Dragon G-ACPY arrived to increase services.
