A MICHAEL T HOLDER GALLERY
We have Mike Holder, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for discovering this venue and providing the maps and press items.
The Article One was published in the Evening News (Waterford) on the 10th July 1913.
The Article Two, show programme and Short article, were all published in the Evening News (Waterford) on the 16th July 1913.
Article Three, in three parts, was published in the Evening Irish Times on the 17th July 1913.
NOTES: I find the mention in Article Three, after having a serious prop-strike, that all that seemed needed was a replacement propeller. No doubt the mechanics examined the engine while they waited, but these days - and for many a year - a prop-strike would require a complete strip-down and very close inspection of all parts. Probably with many critical components being replaced as internal fatigue damage can be very difficult to identify. Then again, in those days, engines were not expected to last very long before being fully overhauled. Even so, as pointed out, serious faults can exist which are not visible.
ANOTHER ASPECT
I might well be mistaken, it is impossible to remember with around 7,000 flying sites listed already, (in mid 2024), but I do think this is the first example of a flying site in Ireland with this amount of background information. This said, I have compiled a list of flying sites in Ireland, (or Eire if you prefer), prior to the 6th December 1922 when the Irish Free State was formed, it then becoming independent of the United Kingdom. Later of course to become the Republic of Ireland. That list is titled 'Irish Republic' and can be found in the usual way.
