Standford Hill

STANDFORD HILL: Early gliding site   (aka STAMFORD HILL)

Operated by:  Mr C S Rolls

Location: Adjacent to and S of the Aero Club’s EASTCHURCH aerodrome on the Isle of Sheppey

NOTES: When C S Rolls, (of Rolls-Royce fame), decided to learn to fly he commissioned the Short brothers to build him a glider which he could practise on. And it was here, possibly exclusively (?), that he made his first trial flights.

STAMFORD HILL?
It sometimes occurs that this site is referred to as STAMFORD HILL. Indeed, in his excellent record of sites in the series of British Built Aircraft Ron Smith in Volume 3 also refers to this site as STAMFORD HILL. But despite being a beginner as an aviation historian, I shall 'stick-to-my-guns' on this.

STREET NAMES
It is nice to see that the significant history of aviation in this part of the world has been respected with street names in Standford Hill such as: Roll's Avenue, Brabazon Road, Wright's Way, McClean Walk and Airfield View.
