Starve Acre
STARVE ACRE: Military landing strips (Aka GIBRALTAR BARRACKS and MINLEY)
Note: This picture (2018) was obtained from Google Earth ©
Note: This map was kindly sent by Will Jackson, (see Notes below), and the location of the two runways seems to be quite clear.
Operated by: Army Air Corps
Location: S of Blackwater
Period of operation: Around 1964 to 1998?
Runways: Roughly: 07/25 425 hard 14/32 290 hard
Note: This information was obtained by looking at a Google Earth image (dated 2017). The evidence of these two runways is still clearly visible, but needless to say the dimensions can only be guessed at. I have elected to use the term 'hard' as it may have been compacted earth or sand, perhaps mixed with bitumen? A section of the 07/25 runway, at the eastern end today, (today - 2022), might provide a clue?
NOTES: In September 2017 I was kindly contacted by Will Jackson who provided me with information regarding this location. It appears that the Army Air Corps used the site initially for exercises with DHC.2 Beavers and Auster AOP.9s. Later helicopters including Sud Aviation Allouettes. And, it seems, Harriers made a few visits. Plus, there is a rumour that a Blackburn Beverley landed here - presumably unladen?
