Note:  See also the listing for STRETTON PRIVATE in CHESHIRE for more info on civil activities.

Military user: WW2: RN Aircraft Maintenance Yard

Gliding: Blackcap Gliding Club
Note: It appears, in 1957 at least, the Blackcap Gliding Club, a Branch of the Royal Naval Gliding and Soaring Association, were operating here.

Helicopter ops: 1980s: Air Ward Aviation Ltd

Airstrip operated by: 1992: Mr J Sykes

Location: SE of B5356 & ESE of Appleton Thorn village, 3nm SE of Warrington

Period of operation: Military: 1942 to 1958      Civil: 1980s to -

Runways: WW2: 02/20   1024x46   hard           09/27   1463x46   hard
                         15/33   1024x46   hard

1992: 09/27   350x20   grass    (N of & at E end of 09/27 WW2 hard runway)

NOTES: It appears that in WW2 Fairey Barracuda aircraft were repaired/rebuilt in Warrington and taken to STRETTON for assembly and flight testing. Fairey managed other repair facilities at BURTONWOOD, Parrs Wood and Reddish. To the best of my knowledge the latter two sites did not have an airfield ‘attached’ to them.
