Takely

Note: This map only shows the location of Takely village. If anybody can kindly provide a more exact position for the airstrip, this advice will be most welcome.

TAKELY: Private airstrip

Location: N of the B1256, (old A120) roughly halfway between Great Dunmow and Bishops Stortford

NOTES: During 1980 an Auster was being flown from a field in an area described as being about 350 – 400 x 30 grass. Being so close to STANSTED invitations to ATC staff at the airport to fly in the Auster were extended.

The Auster had a poor radio but ATC soon got to recognise the ‘noise’ pattern and instructions were given like – “If ready to depart give two clicks.” Having heard the two clicks on the RT a typical clearance might be, “Depart to the east not above 500ft.”
