Tamworth

Note: This map only gives the position of Tamworth within the UK. If anybody can kindly give advice regarding a more exact location, this will be very welcome.

TAMWORTH see also STAFFORDSHIRE MOOR

TAMWORTH: Temporary aerodrome?

NOTES:  Many years ago I made this note: "On the 12th June 1933 Sir Alan Cobham’s No.2 Tour displayed in/near Tamworth. This surely must have been a significant local event so presumably somebody must still know the location for this venue?" As said many times elsewhere it is important to remember that, even if only operating for one day, these sites were ‘Licensed’ by the Air Ministry as ‘official’ aerodromes.

Much later in 2022, Mike Holder, a great friend of this 'Guide', managed to pretty much pinpoint this location. See seperate entry for BIRDSLEY FARM.

A newspaper archive site had a copy of the Tamworth Herald for a report on Cobham's Pageant to be held on 12 Jun 1933. The extract stopped at where it was going to be held; unfortunately you need to register and subscribe to read more.

From the Tamworth Herald – Saturday 22 October 1921 – Under the auspices of Berkshire Aviation Tour, Captain O P Jones is paying a visit to Tamworth with an aeroplane, Staffordshire Moor forming a capital aerodrome. He will arrive at about 5:20pm on Wednesday with flying on the Thursday. Staffordshire Moor is on the NW side of Tamworth abutting against The Leys and bordered to the north by the L &NW Railway centred on 52 38 19”N 001 42 25”W.
