Note: The newspaper article was published in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph on the 27th April 1914.
Note: This second newspaper article was published in the Evening News (London) also on the 27th April 1914.
NOTES: Interesting to see how the two newspaper reports tell entirely different stories. The first of Hamel making a fleeting visit, the second of him being a house guest for the weekend. Which account was correct? Probably we shall never know? The problem of never being able to trust newspaper reporters to get a story correct has certainly not got better over the last one hundred and fifty years, if anything it has got worse by and large.
What we do know is that the best of the early aviators, prior to WW1, had amazing social status. They really were the 'super-stars' of that era. Local dignitaries were very keen to get involved, staging banquets and even public holidays when an exhibition of flying came to town.
