Tatton Park
TATTON PARK: Private airstrip/flying ground, later military RLG (Relief Landing Ground)
Also known as No.13 SLG (Satellite Landing Ground) affiliated to 48 MU HAWARDEN from August 1941 to May 1943 Also used by 51 MU LICHFIELD
Operated by: Pre 1940: Lord Egerton
Military user: WW2: RAF Fighter Command 38 Group
No.1 Parachute Training School
Location: E of A5034, in the grounds of Tatton Hall, 1.5nm N of Knutsford
Period of operation: Civil: ? (but pre WW2 possibly pre WW1 also?) Military: 1940 to 1946
Runway: N/S 914 grass (width the same!) In other words ‘all-over’ grass airfield?
Note:I have seen another map which shows the ‘Landing Strip’ as being angled roughly 02/20 or 03/21 and about 1200 metres long situated N of Tatton Mere lake.
NOTES: It seems not known if Lord Egerton used exactly the same area of TATTON PARK?
When in use as an SLG in WW2 it appears that Blackburn Bothas, Vickers Wellingtons and Handley Page Halifax bombers were stored here. There is a warning in the official WW2 notes that an area with a 3 mile radius of TATTON PARK is used for parachute training only. So how come a RLG and a SLG was nigh on smack bang in the middle?
Parachute training was carried out at that time from RINGWAY which later became the major MANCHESTER airport.
