Teignmouth flying sites

Note:  This map only shows the position of Teignmouth within the UK. Looking at a map is it possible they used the River Teign as opposed to the open sea?

If anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be most welcome.

TEIGNMOUTH: Temporary flying site

NOTES: It appears that on the August Bank Holiday of 1912 the Daily Mail sponsored Messrs Hubert and Fischer to demonstrate two 70hp Farman floatplanes at Teignmouth. It is hard to appreciate today that something like this, just even seeing an aeroplane especially if it might fly, could draw enormous crowds. It appears Hubert flew around Torbay.

Later information seems to reveal that Fischer was weatherbound at SOUTHAMPTON. Hubert arrived in Torbay from TEIGNMOUTH at 07.30pm. Presumably Hubert used the Teign estuary to land and take-off from? It is said the ‘hop’ from TEIGNMOUTH to TORQUAY only took about seven minutes. The Daily Mail project was quite ambitious requiring Hubert and Fischer to carry passengers whenever possible. But - guess what, a stiff sou’westerly arrived scuppering all plans.

Roughly similar circumstances preventing me from visiting the West Country by air for many, many years, eighty years later!

It appears Hubert did manage a couple of local flights from TORQUAY, (there is some confusion as to when these occurred), probably on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning (?) before departing for WESTON-SUPER-MARE at the end of the week.

TEIGNMOUTH: Civil aerodrome

NOTES: In an airfield guide published in 1939 by Reading Aero Club TEIGNMOUTH is listed. I assume this aerodrome was/is listed by another name but was it? HALDON springs to mind as the probable location?
