The Common

Note: This map only shows the position of Lyford village within the UK. If anybody can kindly offer advice regarding the location of The Common, this will be most welcome.

THE COMMON: Private 'airfield' or Landing Ground

Operated by: Berkshire Aviation Co

Location: Near or in Lyford, 4nm N of Wantage, 2nm SSW of Kingston Bagpuze

Period of operation: 1919 to ?

NOTES: Test flying was carried out here. Lyford is a couple miles NW of EAST HANNEY, the main base for the Berkshire Aviation Company in the early days.

It is only a guess, but perhaps they used THE COMMON for test flying to reduce the noise nuisance around EAST HANNEY?

Back in 1919 Lyford was in BERKSHIRE, but these days is situated in OXFORDSHIRE.
