The Avro 504K G-EAKB

This picture was obtained from the Heritage Museum adjacent to the 'The Helicopter Museum' in Weston-super-Mare.

This aircraft, ex-B2588, was registered to the A. V. Roe Co. Ltd on the 14th August 1919, and WFU (Withdrawn From Use) on the 21st August 1920. These aircraft, especially when operated from beach sites and exposed to salt water corrosion, had a very short operational life. Which is why many operators chose to operate from locations just inland.  See nearby BREAN DOWN FARM for example.

Operated by:  A. V. Roe Co. Ltd

Location: On the beach, about 2nm SSW of Weston-super-Mare town centre

Period of operation:  1919 certainly, perhaps 1920?

NOTES:  Many years ago, over twenty years when I started the research for this project, I would have without any hesitation filed this location as WESTON-SUPER-MARE. But, the intervening years have taught me to be far more careful and thoughtful.

It is now my opinion that, when known by another name, each individual flying site deserves to be recorded seperately. It is all part of our astonishing aviation heritage.
