The old Lords Cricket Ground

The old LORD'S CRICKET GROUND:  Balloon ascent venue

Operated by:  André-Jacques Garnerin

Location: Now Dorset Square

Period of operation: 5th July 1802

NOTES:
In his book Falling Upwards Richard Holmes tells us that:  "Garnerin popularised night ballooning and parachuting in England." He had already established a big reputation for this both in his native France but also elsewhere in Europe.

In fact his wife, Jeanne-Geneviève, was the first woman to be recorded making a parachute descent, and this was in 1799. Garnerin also produced firework displays from his balloon during night ascents.
