Tilmanstone

TILMANSTONE: Temporary landing site

NOTES: It appears that during September 1910 John Moisant attempted the first flight from London to Paris with a passenger, at the same time making the first cross-Channel flight with a passenger, his engineer Albert Filieux in a Blériot, and landed at TILMANSTONE whilst en route to France.

Tilmanstone is just W of the A256 about 4.5nm SSW of Sandwich and it seems they didn’t reach Paris (?) but did cross the Channel safely. Is the reason for landing here known? Was it to obtain fuel perhaps, or because the weather dictated a forced landing. If anybody knows, this advice will be most welcome.
