TOPCROFT FARM: Private airstrip
Note: These pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©
The first picture shows the proximity to the WW2 HARDWICK airfield.
Location: Just E of Barondale Lane, and east of the WW2 HARDWICK airfield. Roughly 4nm W of Bungay and 4nm ESE of Long Stratton
Period of operation: 2000s only?
Runway: 10/28 825 grass
NOTES: The initial information came from the AAIB report EW/C2016/10/01. This concerned the very serious accident, fatal for the passenger, when the pilot of the North American P-51D Mustang G-MSTG (USAAF markings 414419 LH-F) appears to have mishandled a go-around, by applying too much power after a botched landing.
I find this interesting simply because, the application of too much power when taking-off for example, could easily create controllability problems, and was fully known about during WW2. It applies to all high-powered piston propeller single-engine fighter types. And yet, for some reason this highly experienced pilot appears to have ignored or forgotten this very basic lesson in power management.
