Torcross

TORCROSS: Temporary beach Landing Ground?

NOTES: There are accounts that joy-riding took place from the beach in/near Torcross between the Wars. Is any more detail known?

Torcross today might appear an unlikely venue, but tourism started to be developed in the late Victorian era. At its peak it appears that Torcross had three hotels and ten B&Bs. After WW1 several concerns were operating joy-rides, and the Avro 504L floatplane was a popular choice.

It therefore seems quite likely that an operator working the south Devon coast might have paid visits in the high season - perhaps just once a week?

Torcross is at the southern end of SLAPTON SANDS - see seperate entry for WW2 activity.
