The outline of this WW2 grass airfield can still be clearly seen. It was basically square with the SW corner severely truncated by the railway line.

631 Sqdn  (Hawker Hurricanes, Miles Martinets &  Vultee A-35 Vengeance TTs)

A/A Co-Operation Unit
 

Location: 0.5nm NNW of Towyn

Period of operation: 1940 to 1945

 

Runways: E/W   640   grass             NE/SW   1006   grass
               NW/SE   1097   grass

 

NOTES: In late 1944 the RAF had 435 men and 102 WAAFs based here. Were the women happy having at least four suitors on average pestering them?

Used as a camping ground for a Royal Artllery H.A.A. Regiment attending Practice/Firing at Tonfanau. in about 1950.
