Tynemouth flying sites

Note: This map only shows the position of CULLERCOATS / TYNEMOUTH Landing Ground.

TYNEMOUTH see also CULLERCOATS

TYNEMOUTH see also CHIRTON

TYNEMOUTH see also SOUTH SHIELDS

TYNEMOUTH: 1930s:  Seaplane Alighting Area only?

Plus associated WW1 Landing Ground further N known as CULLERCOATS

Military user: WW1: RFC/RAF  (Royal Flying Corps / Royal Air Force)

36 [Home Defence] Sqdn   (Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2c)

252 Sqdn  (1918 & 1919)  1918 - Blackburn Kangaroos     1919 - Airco DH.6s

Location: Here again where was it? On the sea or just within the Tyne estuary?

Period of operation: 1916 to 1919?

NOTES: Shown on a Admiralty chart in the 1930s. This appears to be a conglomeration I’ve cooked up from various reports that, (perhaps?), should now be divided up between CULLERCOATS and SOUTH SHIELDS. If it was strictly a WW1 period of operation I would be fairly confident about doing this but the 1930s reference makes me a tad wary. This said I’m pretty certain the activities of 36 (HD) Sqdn were confined to CULLERCOATS which appears to have closed late in 1919. It could well be that SOUTH SHIELDS Seaplane Station was re-activated later on but that leaves 252 Sqdn….where were they flying from?

Naturally I’m assuming that the various accounts I’ve seen are correct!

TYNEMOUTH: Temporary aerodrome

NOTES: On the 29th and 30th July 1933 Sir Alan Cobham’s No.2 Tour displayed at TYNEMOUTH. See listing for CHIRTON.

Also, on the 20th and 21st May Cobham’s 1934 Tour displayed in/near Tynemouth. That location still to be determined in October 2022.
