UPTON: Military Airship Mooring-out Station

Location: Just N of the A35, in the area just N today of Upton Country Park, roughly 2nm NW of Poole town centre

Period of operation: 1917 to 1918     (Others say 1918 to 1919)

NOTES:  Mooring-out station for RNAS/RAF POLEGATE. It appears that two SSZ type airships were based here most of the time.

The RNAS was the Royal Naval Air Service, charged largely with the defence of the UK in WW1. When the Royal Air Force was formed on the 1st April 1918 this combined the RNAS with the RFC (Royal Flying Corps). It was certainly not a popular decision for members serving in either Service.
