Urquhart

Note: This map only shows the position of Urquhart village within the UK.

URQUHART: Military Landing Ground

Military user: RAF Flying Training Command

15 FTS [Flying Training School]     (Airspeed Oxfords)

Location: About 1.5nm N of the A96, 5nm E of Elgin, 5nm SE of Lossiemouth

Period of operation: 1939 to 1940 only?

NOTES: Listed as being in GRAMPIAN during WW2. Quite why GRAMPIAN is listed escapes me. It was never a County as such and I am at a loss to explain its significance - perhaps somebody can kindly explain?

SOMETHING ELSE TO DEBATE?
The information on the web I have found seems way off the mark, and generally suggests that this was RAF Lossiemouth, which is frankly ridiculous. Closer to the mark could be RAF MILLTOWN? But here again, if the information I have found is reliable, this doesn't fit the picture either, as it was operating over a much longer period.

If anybody can kindly throw more light on this, the advice will be much appreciated.

Urquhart LG - regarding your comments on "Grampian". This location was part of the old County of Moray. From 1975, it fell within the new local government unit of Grampian Region. However, in 1996 a further reorganisation disbanded the regions and introduced councils - so it is now within Moray Council. The postal address was always Moray though. In many years of research, I have found very, very few references to this LG and I suspect it was actually little used, probably for the period you suggest.

We'd love to hear from you, so please scroll down to leave a comment!
