WAKEFIELD: Temporary Landing Ground

NOTES: It is recorded that on the 22nd April 1913, Harold Blackburn flew the Blackburn Monoplane belonging to Cyril Foggin from Wakefield to Harrogate. Does anybody now know where this flying site was?

It was recorded in the Leeds Mercury on Monday 18 Aug 1913 that Harold Blackburn made a successful form over Lofthouse Park in Leeds to land at Harrogate alighting on the south Stray opposite the Queens Hotel and being met by the Town Clerk. Dr Christie of Leeds was a passenger. There are photographs of the 2 men in question in the Yorkshire Evening Post dated 02 Oct 1913.

From the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer – Wednesday 23 April 1913 – Yesterday –22 Apr 1913 – Mr Harold Blackburn made a flight from Lofthouse Park, near Wakefield, to Harrogate. It was reported he landed on the Stray at Harrogate 18 mins after take off. He left at 1730 only to crash back on the Stray. This was also reported in the Sheffield Daily telegraph on the 24th – such was the interest in flying.
