Walney

Note: This map only shows the position of Walney Island within the UK.

WALNEY: Temporary civil aerodrome?

Operated by: Sir Alan Cobham’s Municipal Aerodrome Campaign tour

Location: SW of Barrow-in-Furness

Period of operation: 1st Aug 1929

NOTES: I’ll admit to being easily confused about aerodromes situated on Walney Island. Flying past in 1992 and 2003 I am sure I saw at least two probable aerodrome sites as well as BARROW which was then just about operational…. and still is?

But of course, none on these sites existed in 1929 it would appear. Would it be rash to assume that the Cobham Tour used the present aerodrome site? If anybody can kindly offer advice on this, it will be most welcome.

This was the 45th venue for this Tour which started in May and ended in October with one hundred and seven venues visited. Mostly in England but with two in Wales and eight in Scotland. The aircraft he used was the DH61 'Giant Moth' G-AAEV named 'Youth of Britain'. His punishing schedule seems astonishing today, see STOCKTON-on-TEES for extra information.
