*Battle of Britain RAF Station (1st September 1940)       12 Group

29 Sqdn      (Bristol Blenheims)     These had been posted across from DIGBY

This RAF Station seems to have appeared rather late in the ‘RAF Fighter Command Order of Battle’. The ‘Battle of Britain’ period lasting from the 10th July to the 31st October. Some still disagree with these dates and I expect the arguments will go on possibly for ever.

I must admit to being rather surprised when discovering that, (at least one version?), the Bristol Blenheim was still being used in Fighter Command. As pointed out elsewhere the poor sods consigned to ‘daylight’ duties didn’t stand a chance in combat. However, it does appear that Fighter Command during this period did convert some Blenheims with radar for Night Fighter duties. Quite what they expected in terms of effective interception remains open to question? But, it does seem the type did achieve some success although nothing like when the Beaufighter and especially the Mosquito came on the scene.
