WELLS: Temporary Landing Ground
NOTES: On the tour of south-west England arranged by the Daily Mail in 1912 for Henri Salmet, with an HQ based in Bristol, an exhibition of flying was planned for WELLS. As Salmet appears to have reached the other main objectives for displays it seems reasonable to suppose he managed to make a flying display in the vicinity of WELLS? Does anybody now know if this ‘exhibition’ of flying took place, and, if it did, from where?
See WORMWOOD SCRUBS (LONDON) for the list of destinations ‘planned’ or visited on this Tour.
WELLS: Temporary aerodrome
Note: I have to thank Mr Michael T Holder for tracking this venue down. The picture was obtained from Google Earth ©
NOTES: PALACE FARM: Venue 4th May 1932 for Sir Alan Cobham’s National Aviation Day UK Display Tour
Venue 15th May 1933 for Sir Alan Cobham’s No.2 Tour

WELLS: Temporary aerodrome
Note: This picture from the Phillips family has been scanned from the excellent book, Cornwall Aviation Company, by Ted Chapman published in 1979. This company in 1925 embarked on a 'Tour' of the West Country in 1925 equipped with their 1909 Argyll van with solid tyres and their sole aircraft, the Avro 504K G-EBIZ.
The previous year when the company was founded, it appears they only offered 'joy-rides' in and around Cornwall. It is not known when or where this picture was taken, but it clearly shows the rudimentary facilties needed to set up as an 'aerodrome' offering 'joy-rides'.
NOTES:
However, it has to be remembered that even in those days, for use of a site intended for commercial operations, for just one day, it had to be inspected and licensed by the Air Ministry. Later on, for those operaters deemed responsible, they could become 'self-certifying' by producing a six-inch scale map, signed by the operator.
It appears that the full itinery of the 'Tour' is not known? All I have found so far is that it visited TIVERTON, SOMERTON, WELLS & BATH. For more information about the Cornwall Aviation Company in the 1924/1925 era, please see my listings for SOMERTON, TIVERTON, BATH and especially STICKER in Cornwall.
