Welton

Note: This map only gives the position of Welton village within the UK.

WELTON: Military aerodrome?

Military user: Planned to be a RAF Training Depot Station

Location: In/near Welton, about 1.5nm W of the A5, roughly 2/2.5nm NNE of Daventry

NOTES: Probably another ‘victim’ of the Armistice? Listed as being under construction in April 1918.

When starting out on this research I took a very simplistic attitude; if it wasn’t a ‘proven’ flying site and known to be used then it wasn’t a flying site, and I wouldn’t list it. As the learning soon went vertical I had to adopt another approach. For example, many Diversion/Emergency Landing Grounds have been provided over the years - but who now knows if they were ever used?

In the end I decided it was both easier and more interesting to list sites such as this, especially because I came across so many examples of aircraft, both military and civil, landing at sites not officially recorded as being 'active' at the time but which later became 'on charge' for either military or civil use. And indeed, after being declared 'off-charge' or disused.

If anybody can kindly offer advice regarding this site, it will be much appreciated.
