WENVOE MILITARY CAMP:    Airstrip

Note:   Both of these pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©

Location: Just N of the A4050, about 2nm NNE of Barry town centre and roughly 5nm SW of Cardiff city centre

Period of operation:  1943 to 1944

NOTES:   It appears that the camp was developed in 1940 for the British Army, but, the airstrip was laid out when the 115th Field Artillery Battalion moved in during 1943 with their Piper L-4 reconnaissance and communications aircraft. Later the 38th Field Artillery Battalion moved in, presumably also with their own Piper L-4s? Both units were deployed to France during the D-Day campaign.

I have Mr Michael T Holder to thank for pointing this site out.  (Amongst a huge amount of others).
