Westbank Farm
WESTBANK FARM: Temporary aerodrome
Note: These maps and pictures were kindly provided by Mr Michael T Holder. The first map shows the proximity of this venue to the LANARK venue prior to WW1. (See seperate entry).
Operated by: Alan Cobham’s 1932 National Aviation Day UK Display Tour and his 1934 Tour
Location: About 2nm E of Lanark
Period of operation: 12th September 1932, 3rd May 1934
NOTES:
Perhaps it should be remembered that, if only operational for only one day, these sites were certified and licensed by the Air Ministry as being licensed aerodromes and subject to their operational requirements.
It appears certain that Cobham visited Lanark in 1929, but it would seem likely he probably used the racecourse?
The 1932 Tour used seven aicraft registered to Cobham or his affiliated companies, and fourteen aircraft operated by sub-contractors. The 1934 Tour had thirteen aircraft registered to Cobham and just three operating to other participants.

This comment was written on: 2020-05-28 00:06:25From the Carluke and Lanark Gazette – Friday 02 September 1932 – Under the personal direction of Sir Alaan Cobham, Britain’s most famous aviator and protagonist of Empire air routes, National Aviation Day will be held at Lanrak on 12 September 1932. A great flying display will take place during the afternoon and evening at Westbank Farm, Carnwath Road. Westbank farm 55 40 57”N 003 43 09”W is not off the Carnwath Road which is the B7016 running into Carnwath from the south. However, it is just off the road that goes to Carnwath from Lanark.
