Westlands

Note: This map only shows the position of Seaton Carew within the UK. If anybody can kindly provide a more exact location for this site, this advice will be much appreciated.,

WESTLANDS: Private Landing Ground

Operated by: Mr H Ley Wilson, Westlands, West Hartlepool

Location: Near Seaton Carew?

Period of operation: 1930s only?

Runway:   503   grass

NOTES: Trying to pin down exactly where this aerodrome was has been a very frustrating and drawn out affair. In 1933 the operator was listed as being Mr H Ley Wilson, and by 1939 he appears to have been the Secretary for the Hartlepool & Tee-side Flying Club according to Flight magazine.

It was presumably, even in 1933, a fairly active site as it had one hangar and fuel was available from the Landing Ground caretaker. The nearest telephone was in the Seaton Carew Post Office and this detail alone possibly confirms the LG was in this area? Another clue is that the recommended hotel was the Staincliffe Hotel in Seaton Carew, still in business in 2014.

This Landing Ground does appear to be well apart from the WW2 RAF GREATHAM site.
