WEYMOUTH: Temporary flying site

NOTES: It appears that as part of the Daily Mail sponsored series of flying exhibitions in the southern half of England during the summer of 1912, a display was given in Weymouth by the French aviator Monsieur Hubert Latham - possibly flying a Farman type (?) - which was fitted with floats.

Floatplanes were very often used for 'flying exhibitions' at seaside resorts in those days as they dispensed with a need to find a suitable airfield - or should I say field - to operate from.

WEYMOUTH:  Civil aerodrome

NOTES: Trying to glean more information concerning WEYMOUTH AERODROME, situated in the Lodmoor area just to the west of Weymouth town centre, and near the coast, has so far proved almost fruitless. Can anybody help?

However, this said, Gerald Clark has been helping a great deal and will see what he can unearth. Gerald tells me that he has certainly seen a photograph of Alan Cobham standing in front of a sign 'Weymouth Aerodrome' so this can probably be placed as being taken at some point between 1929 and 1935.

WEYMOUTH: Temporary aerodrome?

NOTES:  Weymouth was the 61st venue, in August, for the 1929 Sir Alan Cobham's Municipal Aerodrome Campaign. This Tour started in May and ended in October with one hundred and seven venues being visited.

The aircraft he used was the DH61 'Giant Moth' G-AAEV, named 'Youth of Britain'. The punishing schedule he set himself seems astonishing today, see STOCKTON-on-TEES for more information. I can also highly recommend reading his memoirs - 'A Time To Fly'.

It is of course very tempting to assume an existing flying site was used, but experience has taught me to be very wary of jumping to such easy conclusions. If anybody can kindly offer advice regarding the location of the 1929 venue, this will be very welcome.
