WHILTON: Private airfield/airstrip
Note: All six of these pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©
Location: Just W of Whilton, about 4nm ENE of Daventry town centre
Period of operation: Early 2000s (?) to -
Runway(s): This is a most unusual site which utterly confounds my basic attempts to provide a description. Typically, if a private site has two or more runways I describe it as an airfield, and if only one I call it an airstrip. This site however appears to have started off as being pretty much an 'all-over' airfield with no defined strips. As can be clearly seen in the 2005 picture above. Then, as can be very clearly seen in the 2009 picture there are at least two and possibly three strips.
2009: 15/33 280 grass 18/36 310 grass 10/28 180 grass
Note: I am of course guessing that the 10/28 strip was intended to be used as a runway. It doesn't appear to make any sense as a taxiway and would be very useful for use in a howling westerly wind. Which of course can occur surprisingly quickly, especially when a squall front appears.
2017: 18/36 310 grass
NOTES: As always in this 'Guide', if anybody can kindly offer advice - this will be most welcome.
