Whinmoor
WHINMOOR: Temporary aerodrome
NOTE: Although used for several displays with passenger flights available, it appears that this location was never used as an established aerodrome.
A MICHAEL T HOLDER GALLERY
Although, as stated above, this site was, (it appears), never an established aerodrome as such - it was being nominated in 1929 as an ideal site for a regional aerodrome/airport to serve the region. In the end YEADON won the day as it served both Leeds and Bradford equally well, and indeed was later of course renamed as LEEDS BRADFORD AIRPORT.
A HEATED DEBATE
This debate regarding where a suitable aerodrome should be located is well illustrated in the following article published in the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer on the 14th December 1929.
OTHER INFO AND MAPS
Note: The second item, an article regarding the Yorkshire Light Aeroplane Club, was published in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph on the 19th August 1925. The third item, a picture, was published in the Leeds Mercury on the 29th May 1933.
Note: The fifth item was published in the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer on the 22nd June 1936.
A GALLERY OF ADVERTS AND AN ARTICLE FROM ROD HEWITT
NOTES: The first item was published in the Yorkshire Post on the 25th May 1935. The second item was published in the Yorkshire Evening Post on the 19th June 1936. I have added the area view from my Google Earth © based database.
Operated by: British Empire Air Displays, Jubilee Air Displays
Location: Near to the junction of the York Road, (A64), and Thorner Lane. About 5nm NE of Leeds city centre
Period of operation: 1925 to ? (Probably 1936?)
NOTES: We have Mr Rod Hewitt to thank for drawing our attention to this location. However, Rod would like to point out that he was really just the messenger and the full credit should go to the staff of the Leeds Local & Family History Library. I would also like to add that the library services have been, over the years, absolutely first class in trying their best, and very often suceeding, in obtaining so many quite obscure and rare books for my research.
