WHITEGATE FARM: Gliding site

Note:  Both of these pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©

Operated by: The Wrexham Gliding Club

Location: Roughly 0.5nm SE of Wrexham town centre

Period of operation:  Unknown but probably 1920s to mid 1930s

Runways: Situated on a sloping field which starts at 265ft ASL at the W end and is 206ft ASL at the E end. It appears that the glider launch ‘tracks’ were about 345 metres long.

In those days the most common method of launching gliders, (unless a car was available), was for a team to run downhill pulling a long elasticated bungee which acted as a crude catapult. Exhausting work even for fit youngsters I would imagine. As a general rule in those days, most gliding flights were of very short duration and in a straight(ish) line.

We have Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for pinpointing this location. He tells us that by 1938 Whitegate Farm had been built over.

As always in this 'Guide', if anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be most welcome.
