On May 15th 1918 Capt McCudden flew the “Pot-belly” Vickers F.B.16D from AYR to here. The No.1 School of Aerial Gunnery officially moved from AYR on the 11th May 1918 it seems
WHITEHAVEN: Temporary aerodrome
NOTES: According to the August 1927 edition of Flight magazine, 1.5nm E of Whitehaven. So, could this be the location selected by the Sir Alan Cobham ‘crew’ for the display by their No.1 Tour in/near Whitehaven on the 23rd June 1933? The Cobham 1934 Tour also displayed in/near Whitehaven on the 27th April. Does anybody now know where this location was?
It is probably not known by many that the flying sites used by the 'Flying Circus' operators were actually fully licensed aerodromes - even if used for one day. In the beginning these sites were surveyed by officials from the Air Ministry who set down limitations for their use. Later, the 'Flying Circus' operators were allowed to be 'self-certifying'. Which of course implies that they were regarded as being highly proficient and professional.
