Operated by:  The Isle of Wight Gliding Club

Location:  N of the A3020, about 1.75nm W of Shanklin town centre and roughly 2.75nm NNW of Ventnor town centre

NOTES:  We have Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide' to thank for locating this gliding site. He has found a record, published in 1930, of "Where Gliding Can Be Seen." It states that, "Saturdays and Sundays from 3.pm at Whiteley Bank."

We need to remember that in those days, 'gliding' was nothing like we expect in more recent years. As a general rule the glider would be born aloft by a group of enthusiasts tugging the glider, running downhill pulling on a bungee chord. By and large it seems, just staight line glides were achieved....but at least the pilot got aloft, if for only a very short period.

However, it does appear that the most proficient pilots, could, if the conditions were highly favourable, remain flying - or soaring - for longer.

If anybody can kindly offer more advice and information, this will be much appreciated.
