A Guide to the history of British flying sites within the United Kingdom

Wick Farm

Note: This map gives a pretty accurate position of this site within the UK. As so often the case with the sites used in the 1930s, now in the middle of town suburbs.

WICK FARM: Temporary aerodrome?

Operated by: Alan Cobham’s 1935 No.1 Tour

Location: Presumably near to Wick village 1nm NNW of Littlehampton town centre

Period of operation: 3rd September 1935

NOTES: Was this the same site used as the 104th venue for Sir Alan Cobham’s 1929 Municipal Aerodrome Campaign? This Tour started in May and ended in October with one hundred and seven venues visited - so this was probably in October?

Most venues were in England but two were in Wales and seven in Scotland. Without any doubt this Tour resulted in several aerodromes/regional airports being created. But not in Littlehampton.

The same question applies when on the 15th August Cobham’s 1934 Tour also displayed in/near Littlehampton. But, experience has taught me to be very wary of jumping to the conclusion that the same site was used during these years. Quite often they varied by a few fields - or a farm or two.

If anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be most welcome.
