Operated by: Highland Airways

Location: About 1.5nm SE to SSE of Kirkwall town centre, roughly I nm W of KIRKWALL airport

Period of operation:  1933 to ?

Note:  Possibly until after WW2 and after the military aerodrome, RN GRIMSETTER, (now KIRKWALL), was handed over to the Ministry of Civil Aviation in 1948

NOTES: In May 1933 Highland Airways began an Inverness, (LONGMAN AERODROME), to WICK and Kirkwall, (WIDEFORD), service using the GAL Monospar ST-4  Mk.2 G-ACEW.

In June 2018 Mike Charlton very kindly sent me this picture from a postcard, and he has an amazing collection. See:  www.aviationpostcard.co.uk

The caption states that this was the first arrival of an air service to Kirkwall. For some reason it appears that this aircraft fell out of favour with Highland Airways, and was registered to Mr Charles Henry Tutt of London SE6 and based at GRAVESEND (KENT) from the 13th of April 1934 until the 7th December 1937. And there the trail seems to end.

The DH84 Dragon G-ACIT
The DH84 Dragon G-ACIT

Note: This picture was kindly provided by Mike Holder, and shows G-ACIT at WIDEFORD in 1933. Being registered on 24.07.33 it was pretty much brand new. Indeed, as photographers expect to be paid for their services, it could well be a picture was taken on its first arrival at WIDEFORD?

Mike Holder also found this article, published in The Scotsman on the 25th March 1937, regarding a flight made from RENFREW on the 24th. Presumably landing here? But, did West of Scotland Air Services subsequently start a regular service from RENFREW?
